Community Councillors role
Community Councillors have an active interest and concern for their local community. They represent local people and work in partnership with them and others when necessary. They help facilitate the provision of local services and facilities and take decisions that form the policy of their Council. What's involved? Having a passion for their community, Community Councilor's are volunteers who meet once a month. Our mission is to maintain and improve the village for all and you can support this by proposing or getting involved in local projects, research and bringing your skills and expertise to the council and our village.
Community Councillors are not paid; however, they can claim expenses and allowances to enable to carry out this role and have to abide by a Local Government Code of Conduct and declare their financial interests. Town/Community Councillors must also declare a personal or prejudicial interest in any matter under discussion at a community/town council meeting.
What is the role of the Community Council?
Community councils are the part of local government closest to the people. They serve the smallest area and are responsible for the most local of matters. They are elected units of local government whose activities are controlled by Acts of Parliament or legislation introduced by the Welsh Government. Community Councils have a number of basic responsibilities in making the lives of local communities more comfortable, many of which are often taken for granted. Essentially these powers fall within three main categories:
· representing the whole electorate within the community;
· delivering services to meet local needs;
· and striving to improve quality of life in the community.
Individual powers include the provision and maintenance of community transport schemes, traffic calming measures, local youth projects, litter bins, street lighting, street cleaning, allotments, bus shelters, opens spaces, and crime reduction measures. Community and town councils can also comment on planning applications - they are statutory consultees (they have to be consulted if they so wish) and can be represented at public inquiries.
